Mothers’ Union
HISTORY
The Barbados Mothers’ Union is part of a society of over three million women. The organisation was started in England in 1876 as a ministry for mothers in the Church, by Mary Sumner, who was inspired by a great vision concerning the Christian responsibilities of motherhood.
During her lifetime, Mary Sumner saw the Mothers’ Union grow from a small informal beginning to a worldwide organisation operating in sixty eight (68) dioceses, with a membership of over 400,000. It celebrated its centennial in 1976. Mary Sumner’s vision continues to grow and today the Mothers’ Union is a vital and important part of the work of the Anglican Communion in the world.
