Message FromSt. Matthias Anglican Church
The Rev. Canon DeVere Murrell

Canon DeVere Murrell

The Parish Family of St. Matthias Church in Barbados welcomes you to our website, and to our Church if you are ever on the island or if you live here and may be visiting.

St. Matthias has always been proud of  its simplicity of worship in the Anglican tradition and we continue to offer Holy Communion and/or Sung Eucharist every Sunday with Sung Mattins on the third Sunday of the month. Our Family Service, a non traditional worship experience,  takes place on the First Sundays and this is followed by Holy Communion.

We are at the moment planning celebrations for our one hundred and sixtieth Anniversary of Consecration (August 2009 – August 2010) and will post these as soon as they are finalised. We would be privileged to have you join us for any or all of these events.

One of the highlights of our Anniversary Year is the appointment of Mrs. Natalie Parris-Yearwood as our first Youth and Community Development Officer, whose duties entail strengthening our ministry to the youth and establishing linkages with the surrounding community. This is a full time two year appointment.

We would be delighted to hear from you through our guestbook, email or the post. Of course, you are also welcome to join our message board.

May God Bless you and yours.

Special Letter From The Rector

My Dear Brothers and Sisters

This note serves to inform you that I shall be away from the parish from August 22 until December 5 on Sabbatical Leave.

Managing a parish the size and complexity of ours can be very draining and demanding and after seventeen years as your Rector, I think that there is a very real need to take this break. It will be, I trust, an opportunity to refresh and rejuvenate myself physically, mentally and spiritually and so return to the task better equipped to carry forward the ministry here at St. Matthias.

In my absense the Reverend Merlene Lucas will act as Priest-in-Charge and she will be assisted by Canon William Dixon. I do believe that with Reverend Merlene's knowledge of the parish and Canon Dixon's wealth of knowledge and experience, our Church and its affairs will be in good hands. I know too, that our members have always risen to the occasion and that, as usual, you will do so in this regard and offer both Reverend Lucas and Canon Dixon your support and encouragement.

Let me take this opportunity to thank all of you for the exellent encouragement and caring support you have given me over time as I look forward to returning to the parish the better for having taken this leave.

With best wishes,

Canon DeVere Murrell
Rector
